Luke 17:11–19 records a fascinating incident. Ten lepers cried out to Jesus. "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." Leprosy could mean any number of physical disfigurement. But to be a leper meant more than having physical deficit. Lepers were also social outcasts and forbiden to participate in their community. We can certainly understand why they asked Jesus to show them mercy.

And Jesus granted their request. "Go and show yourselves to the priests." According to the Old Testament the priest would verify that a person was healed of disfiguring diseases. And, indeed, as the ten lepers obeyed Jesus and set out to seek a priest, they found that they were cleansed.

This miraculous healing is followed by another unexpected incident. That is, only one of the healed lepers came back to praise God and to thank Jesus. But where were the nine? Should they have not also come? Should they not have answered God's grace with gratitude? Indeed, all should have returned with thanks and praise.

When God grants us mercy, it calls for a response of gratitude. This is the essence of worship. God has lavished his grace and kindness to us. So we give to our God and Savior our glad and joyful worship.
