Psalm 98 teaches us what confident prayer looks like. Ps 98:1 starts out with "Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him." But as we continue to read on, a surprising truth becomes clear. What Ps 98:1 states as God's already-accomplished feat, stated appropriately in the past tense, is actually not yet done. Ps 98:8–9 "Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity." Thus Psalm 98 introduces us to the important concept of already / not-yet. The psalmist praises God as though everything is already right. And at the same time the psalmist longs for the reality of what is not-yet present.

This perspective of already / not-yet imparts stability to our souls. Amidst injustice and wrongs, we can have joy, for we know that God will set all things right. It also keeps us from finding our comfort and satisfaction as things are today. This becomes clear in Ps 98:9 "He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity." There would be no need for his hope if we already enjoy righteousness and equity in this world. We do not. But our soul finds rest in God, and we praise him.
