Psalm 133 is one of the Songs of Ascents, which the Old Testament saints sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem to worship God. And it is clear that Psalm 133 captures an important aspect of life as God's people which is often neglected today. Ours is a culture that considers individual freedom as sacrosanct. In such a culture and time we are all too easily convinced that spiritual life is a private and individual matter. But as we have repeatedly seen in our Ephesians study, which we also see in Psalm 133, our spiritual pilgrimage is a shared calling and blessing. Thus David says, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity."

Then David goes to describe the blessings of shared pilgrimage as oil that drips down Aaron's beard and the collar of his robes. Aaron and all subsequent Old Testament priests were anointed with oil, which was itself a sign of the Spirit's anointing upon their person and calling. That is, in Psalm 133 David sees the saints serving and worshiping the Lord together as the sign of the Spirit's presence and anointing.

We often pray to God, "Bless me, bless me!" Have you considered that the Lord has richly answered your prayers by giving you his saints as your brothers and sisters? You are not alone. You belong. So give thanks when you come to church this Sunday. And look around you. You will see God's rich and abundant blessings in the face of your brothers and sisters.
