Are you sure you are forgiven? How can you know? How can you know what God actually thinks about you and how he actually feels about you?

We will find nothing but dead ends and bewildering labyrinth if we try to answer these important questions by looking inward our own souls. Perhaps you ask "Have I done my best and enough?" The honest answer is a resounding "No." Or you may ask "Do I feel good about myself?" But we would be foolish to trust our eternal destiny to a feeling that a glass wine can easily produce in us. We need a better way and better answers.

That is why God gives us the good news, based not on what we have done or how we feel, but what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. Peter tells us in Acts 10:34–43 the answers we are seeking. "They put him (Jesus) to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear…that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." The crucified and risen Lord Jesus is how we know that we are forgiven, that God has loved us even when we did not love him, and that while our feelings and circumstances change, God is true and his promises never change.

This is God's promise to you: "everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." So we believe, and thus we receive, and therefore we rejoice.
