We begin the first worship service of 2024 with a very familiar passage. Genesis 1:1–5 is the account of God's creation of the world. On the first day of creation, God spoke light into existence. We relate to light in one of two ways. First, the light is itself the object of our attention and admiration. We marvel at the beauty of its luminescence. Second, light enables us to see other things by it. This is helpful as Scriptures tell us that God is himself our light (Revelation 21:23). God is himself the object of our admiration, and by him we see everything. This is an appropriate reminder as we begin a new year. May we all marvel at God's glory, and by the light of his glory see everything in truth.
This week's second passage is also very familiar. Mark 1:4–11 bears witness to the One who has come to be our light in the darkness of our sin. Of Jesus God says, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." The Father delights in his Son, Jesus. So we delight in Jesus. And the heart that adores Jesus also sees the whole world in light of Jesus. Jesus is the light by which we learn truth and wisdom. May our hearts be drawn to Jesus, to delight in him, and to live by his light.
