This Sunday we will gather to celebrate our Lord's resurrection from the dead. Why did Jesus die? Why did he rise? These realities are both defining and formative. Today the label "Christian" is used in such varied and non-historical ways that the word "Christian" is on the verge of becoming meaningless. When a word can mean anything that anyone wants it to mean, then the word has lost its meaning. But the historical Christian faith is defined by Jesus' death and resurrection. That is, only that person who receives the historical meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection, and wholeheartedly believes in them without reservation, is a Christian.

Jesus' death and resurrection are also formative. They shape our souls, worship, and piety by the sheer magnitude of their beauty and demand. That is, no Christian who professes to believe in Jesus' death and resurrection can opt out of being shaped by these events. Jesus' death and resurrection will leave such indelible imprint upon us that we will begin to take on the air of our true home. Is this true of you? Come, and learn what Jesus' death and resurrection mean. Come, and be formed by the cross and the empty tomb. Come, and begin to live as befits your calling as a Christian.
