William Cowper's beloved hymn "God Moves in a Mysterious Way" contains the memorable words "…behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face." We had all hoped that by this time COVID-19 would be well behind us. However, it seems COVID-19 will be with us a little while longer. What then? We must acknowledge God's wise sovereignty. And to borrow from another beloved hymn, we confess, "Whate'er God ordains is right." This is not to make light of the situation, or to glibly dismiss the challenge and suffering that many people are facing. It means, however, to recognize that God's wisdom is such that he uses for his and our good the circumstances that only seem evil to us. And it also means cheerfully confessing that God's love is such that he ordains nothing that will ultimately harm us. We know, because the Bible tells us both that God is able and he is love, that God has provided for us ways for us not merely to survive, but even to thrive. So we worship. For worship is the way by which we peer through the dark clouds of "frowning providence" and see our Father's smiling face.

Psalm 107:1–3

Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.""

The Proclamation of the Gospel

Romans 8:26

"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
