Before We Worship
What do you wish that people knew about you?
The answer to this question tells us what we boast about, what we are most proud of, what gives us a sense of worth and identity. Perhaps we want people to know what exciting jobs we have. If so, we boast of our professional achievement and we find our identity in our work. Perhaps we want other people to see how our children made the honor roll and are well-behaved. We boast of being good parents because that is what gives us a sense of worth. What do you want people to know about you?
During this past week's Knowing God study, we had an opportunity to think about what we boast about. And we reflected on Jeremiah 9:23–24 (ESV)
"Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.""
We boast in the knowledge of God. That is not to say we are itching to advertise how much theology we know. That is not what Jeremiah means by boasting. Rather, it means we know how much we are loved. God has seen us at our worst. He knows all the terrible ways we will sin and falter in the future. Yet knowing us at our worst, he loves us! And he does not love us with a hesitation or reservation, but with an immovable steadfastness. God's love for us is what gives us our worth and identity. For, to him, we are not worthless nobodies. Rather, we are his beloved friends!
If so, how can we not boast of knowing God? Our God is what we want people to see in us and through us. Indeed, may our worship be a time of boasting in Christ. May God be our truest treasure and deepest delight.
