In Psalm 48 the psalmist sees the nations mustering their combined forces against Zion. But soon they are confounded, because even their combined might is no match against Zion's great King. For God is the great King who sits enthroned in Zion, and there is no power on earth that can match the Lord's power.

Zion is the city of our God, and it serves as a typological stand-in for God's heavenly kingdom and reign. The unassailable power that psalmist describes in Psalm 48 is really a statement about the power of God's throne to easily subdue all the powers that rage against him. This is a balm for our weary and anxiety-riddled hearts. Our God is strong to glorify his name and preserve us. Why are we so afraid? No power can overwhelm our God. Why do we panic over things that are less than nothings to God?

Mark 6:1–13 is a lesson about God's power. Those that were destined to perish had nothing but contempt for Jesus. But in Jesus' name God's kingdom advanced and the demons fled from his presence. Strange, though, isn't it? God hid his foe-conquering power in the preaching of the gospel. Many, indeed, did not have eyes to see or ears to hear. They only saw and heard what filled their hearts with contempt. They dismissed the message. Yet for those set apart for God see and hear God's power. As long as we have the Word, we have nothing to fear. While the Word of God stands, we will stand. God's kingdom and Word will stand forever. We will also stand forever.
