Psalm 23 is a most beloved psalm. It tells us about God's abiding faithfulness in this life and beyond. This psalm is then made even more special and poignant by the fact that our Lord Jesus called himself our shepherd. See, for example, John 10:11–13. We love Psalm 23 because it is a portrait of our good and faithful shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Now note what John tells us in 1 John 3:16–18. Having Jesus as our good and faithful shepherd who laid down his life for us bestows upon us a holy calling, whereby "we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers." We are loved. We must, therefore, love. We are loved with a great love. We must, therefore, love deeply, not merely "in love or talk but in deed and in truth."

We are duly humbled. That Jesus has, and continues to, love us so deeply, that we are even in our best moments very far from loving our brothers as Jesus has loved us, humbles us deeply. But humility before God is never a failure. For when we humble ourselves before God, he lifts us up.

Let us approach God with humility. He will gently guide us. And as we follow our faithful shepherd, we will by degrees become like him.
