Malachi 3:1–4 is a well-known Messianic prophecy. The LORD will send a “messenger, and he will prepare the way before me.” This, of course, is referring to John the Baptist who prepared the way before Jesus. John was to be a herald of the coming King. But the coming of the King poses a significant problem. “But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD.” The Messiah will come and purify the Levites — here characterizing Israel particularly in their identity as worshiping people — and this purification will be through fire that burns away the dross. Then, only then, as the hearts and characters of the worshipers are purified, their offering will be acceptable to the LORD.

Here, then, is one aspect of the Advent that is often overlooked. God will send his Son into this world so that people may learn to worship God in an acceptable manner! Right worship is so important to God that he ordained Jesus' incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection to accomplish it.

Come, then, and worship the Lord in holiness. He will not accept the gifts of unbelieving heart or the praise of defiled souls. Come and cast your sins to the foot of the cross, and with all earnestness set your body and soul for the Lord. And worship. That is why Jesus came into this world.
