As one year ends and another begins, we are naturally in a reflective mood. Did I live well this year? What can I do better in the new year? What am I most proud of and thankful for this year? What do I look forward to in the new year? Human beings, of course, are the only creatures that look back and look forward. This, too, is part of what it means to be made in God’s image.
Indeed, looking back and looking forward are written into the fabric of every worship service. We look back to creation, fall, and to the cross and the empty tomb. The Law and the Gospel then lead to the foretaste of the glory to come. As we partake of the bread and the cup, we look forward to the feast of heaven and the consummation of all things.
Psalm 148 is a vision of the glories to come. It sees the whole creation united in praise to God. Sin and sorrow are gone. Only blessing and praise remain. “Praise him, all his angels…sun and moon…all you shining stars…you great sea creatures…Mountains and all hills…Beasts and all livestock…Kings of the earth and all peoples…Young men and maidens together, old men and children! Let them praise the name of the LORD…Praise the LORD!”
May the Lord bless us this new year. May we become the people of praise. And with God’s help, we will look forward to the glories to come and we will rejoice.
