It’s good to remember that we do not know the whole story and we do not see the whole picture. Our perspectives are necessarily limited to what we can see and experience. Consider Psalm 93. In that entire psalm, the only thing the psalmist can see with his eyes are stated in verse 3. “The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.” Now imagine how frightening his life would have been for him if all he knew was what he could see with eyes and hear with his ears. Even today with our advanced infrastructure floods can can be deadly. In the ancient world the sound of flood waters roaring would have been the sound of certain doom.

But Psalm 93 reminds us that what we see with our eyes and hear with our ears do not represent the complete reality. While the flood waters are powerful, there is a greater power, still. “The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.” The power of the One who sits upon heaven’s throne is greater than the powers that threaten us. “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!”

This, indeed, is the whole picture. God reigns with power. And he is powerfully accomplishing his good purpose even when all we see and hear are dangers that terrify us. “Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.” Remember, then, that what you see and hear are only a part of the story, and not even the most interesting part of the story! God is on his throne. He reigns with power. And he is good.
