What does it mean to take the Lord's name in vain? Well, it surely means using God's name as an expletive. Right? Yes, it certainly includes that. But it is also more than that. God's name is a summary of his character and attributes. Using the Lord's name in vain means, then, having contempt in our heart for who God is and what he has done. That is, the Third Commandment is dealing with something with a far greater reach than we usually assume. We encourage you to read the Shorter Catechism's treatment of the Third Commandment for reference.
