Psalm 15 asks the all important question: "O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?" There is actually no question more important than this. Whatever else we think is important, when viewed against the fleeting nature of life, is actually not that important. Decades pass swiftly, and years pass in a blink of an eye. Soon we will "shuffle off this mortal coil" and step into eternity. There is no question more important than "Will I be welcomed by God or will God reject me?"

Well, Psalm 15 does not just ask the question. It also answers that all important question. What kind of people does God welcome into his presence? The answer is troubling. "He who walks blamelessly and does what is right…" Psalm 15 lists the requisite moral qualities of those who "make it" into heaven, and it is clear that we don't meet the qualifications. Who can say they are blameless before God? Who can say they have always ever done what is right? Reflecting on Psalm 15 makes us realize that heaven is out of our reach and the door is shut fast against us.

So, then, what do we do? Here two paths diverge. Many take the road of righteousness according to works. They knock on heaven's door in their own merit, and find their own righteousness falls woefully short of God's standard.

But there is a better way. Psalm 15 actually draws us to Jesus. The exquisite moral perfection it paints is a portrait of our Savior. Jesus is the blameless one who has always done what is right. In the New Testament we see that Jesus is the one who "honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change…" Jesus is God's gift to us. Heaven is ours in Jesus. Jesus is the answer to the most important question of our life.
