Before We Worship

I recently had an interesting conversation with a man who identified as a native American. He was a pleasant and a sincere man, and I very much enjoyed talking with him. He willingly shared with me his spiritual beliefs, and I soon discovered that his spiritual perspectives were aligned with the traditional native American spirituality — a deeply held reverence for the Creator who made everything. In his view the Creator made all mankind, no matter what religion they profess, and all mankind will be in paradise after death. During the course of the conversation he also shared with me some very tragic and evil things he and his family have suffered. My heart ached as I listened. It was clear that he was carrying heavy burdens, and that his spirituality of worshiping the Creator was insufficient to give him peace.

We live in a broken world, and people who have been wronged and sinned against need a God who is holy. Only the God of holiness will not ignore the wrongs we have suffered, but will give perfect justice and recompense. Justice is often denied and hampered in this world, but it is never denied by God. So I shared with him that God is angry at the wrongs he and his family have suffered. And with it, I shared that we all fall short of the Creator's standards and expectations. We have also sinned against the Creator, and we have no hope apart from God the Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Our God is Creator and Redeemer. So we have always confessed: "I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son…". Our God is justice for the wronged, and mercy for those who have wronged. And our God is able to carry all our heavy burdens.
