Before We Worship
Paul writes in Romans 5:8, "but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." That is, God did not give his son to sinners once they began to leave their sins behind and seek God earnestly. On the contrary, God gave his son while we actively rebelled against him, dismissed his teachings, and shunned his kindness. That is, God did not love us because we were lovable, but he loved us just when were were unlovable. God loved us because he is love, not because we deserved his love.
But God's love for us in Jesus Christ is good news to sinners not only when we first begin to believe, but throughout all the days of our lives. Do not ever suppose that God who loved you when you were his enemies now loves any less those who are now his children. We may continue to sin and stumble, but God's love for us never changes. Because none other than Jesus made atonement for our sins, God has no wrath left against us. God is not disappointed with our failings. He does not resent us when we stumble. He has nothing towards us except the deepest and the most tender love.
The problem, of course, is that this just sounds wrong. How can God not be angry, at least a tiny little bit, when we are so far from being holy? How can he not be upset, at least just a little bit, when we have proved ourselves disobedient and foolish time and time again? We feel utterly uncomfortable with a love that never wavers. But that is exactly how God loves us today and will love us tomorrow and forever.
Did you have a rough week? Did you see yet again, perhaps to your great consternation, how sin is a daily reality for you? And maybe you have been thinking that there is no way God loves you ardently and passionately. If so, you could not be more wrong. God gave his son to you while you were his enemies. Now you are his child. He loves you without reservation. And that will never change.
