Before We Worship
Someone once remarked that the Church of Jesus Christ is the only organization in the world where the qualification for membership is that people do not deserve to be members! We should also note that the kinds of people Jesus welcomes are those who least deserve his welcome. This is beautifully expressed in the hymn "Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy" by Joseph Hart.
Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love, and power.
Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome, God's free bounty glorify; true belief and true repentance, ev'ry grace that brings nigh.
Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him.
Come, ye weary, heavy laden, lost and ruined by the fall; if you tarry till you're better, you will never come at all.
I will rise and go to Jesus! He will save me from my sin. By the riches of his merit, there is joy and life in him.
It is a pity that this hymn is not as well-known as it should be. We may have to do something about it soon!
In the mean time, take to heart the words: "all the fitness he requireth is to geel your need of him." The only thing Jesus requires from you is that you need him. That is it. So come, ye sinners, poor and needy. Jesus stands ready to save you. He is full of pity, love, and power.
