Before We Worship
God has revealed himself clearly enough in this world that we have no excuse for disobeying his will. On the other hand, there are enough things we do not understand about this world so that we can only live by faith. Life raises many questions we cannot answer. And when "darkness veils his lovely face" faith is our weapon and trusting God is our way forward.
The author of Psalm 73 knew, on the one hand, who God is, for he had made himself known in his Word and world. On the other hand, he had many questions about this world he could not easily answer. If God lives, why do the wicked prosper? If hardship is all I have to show for my faith, what is the point? These were difficult questions for the psalmist, and they are difficult questions for us. But notice how the psalmist moves forward. He arms himself with faith and moves forward with his trust in God. "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
We can move forward with faith when life is confusing. We do not need to have a ready answer for every question as long as we have God, for he is himself our Answer. Who is the strength of your heart? Who is your everlasting portion? God is the answer.
