Before We Worship

It is very easy to forget how much God has blessed us. In many parts of the world people's lives are turned upside down by wars, natural disasters, or political turmoils that displace people from their homes. They are often made to live on the road, longing for a home they have lost, wondering if they will ever have a place to call home again. But, thankfully, that is not our struggle. God has given us stable homes. But that also means we are often insensitive to the pains and the longings of those who wander through places that do not welcome them.

Perhaps that is the reason why it is difficult for us to fully engage with Psalm 84. For in that psalm we meet a pilgrim who is homesick. He is traveling through rough and hostile places and longs for the rest that he will only find in the house of the LORD. But we get the sense that he would feel just as homesick in a comfortable house surrounded by the best things of this world. The longings of the pilgrim are only ever fulfilled when he arrives in his heavenly home.

It is, of course, right to be grateful and enjoy the many blessings God has given us in this life. But don't get too comfortable. You are not created to find your best in this life. Our best will only come in God's house.
